West Virginia wild trout are found exclusively in the Appalachian Highlands (shown in pink). Click on the map to bring up a detailed stream map of the area (PDF – 3.4MB).
We created this map for the 2006 version of this site using the Southern Appalachian Assessment GIS Database (SAAGIS).
The 8 digit numbers on the map provide the standard HUC coding for basins, which is also used in the NHD database. This makes it easy to generate high quality road maps using the NHD Geodatabase web-viewer, simply by zooming directly to the basin code (See GIS Tools – Topo Maps/National Map). Just remember to add a leading 0 to the basin value on the map when selecting a basin on the National Map, and to select the correct search result.
For example, the HUC code on the map might be: “207001”. You should enter “0207001” into the search box on the the National Map (add a leading zero). You will get back several results including zip code 02070, and several variations on the HUC code. Just pick the right one.
